Karl Foerster feather reed grass is an industry-landscape staple and was named the Perennial Plant of the Year in 2001. The glossy green foliage of Karl Foerster grows into an attractive mound by early summer and reaches approximately 2 to 3 feet tall. By midsummer, the flower stems begin to emerge and can reach up to 6 feet tall. The flowers start out as green and eventually transition into soft, airy, glittery pink plumes. As the season progresses, Karl Foerster shifts from pink to dark maroon, then to bronze, and finally to golden tan. Attractive all season, the flower stalks are strong and remain standing throughout the winter. The beautiful flowers make an excellent and long-lasting cut flower.
Karl Foerster does not self-seed or spread and requires little input. It is not susceptible to serious diseases and does not have issues with insects. Karl Foerster feather reed grass is hardy and thrives in a variety of situations. It is tolerant of both drought and clay soils. Use Karl Foerster feather reed grass in perennial borders, parking lots, driveways, or anywhere an ornamental grass is desired.
